Everyone has secrets, says Miles Haley, this film's Greek Chorus and the sexually frustrated assistant to reporter Rowena Price (Halle Berry); and, according to director James Foley and screenwriter Todd Komarnicki, those secrets make the lot of us slimy and unsympathetic.  So it's just as well that this is one of those movies that's more about the twists and turns of the plot than its characters.  When a friend of Rowena's turns up dead after an affair with married ad executive Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis), Miles (Giovanni Ribisi) helps Rowena go undercover in Hill's ad agency to find out what happened.  Meanwhile, images from Rowena's childhood keep popping up to remind us there's more to this story than meets the eye.  Tortuous, cynical, and utterly heartless.
