Good, if overrated, horror film, loosely based on the 1957 short story by George Langelaan. True, Jeff Goldblum's performance is excellent, and the special effects are commendably disgusting (because they're supposed to be), but the story -- about what happens when a scientist accidentally fuses his DNA with that of a fly during a teleportation experiment -- is told from the wrong perspective. As Langelaan understood, this is really the woman's story (in this case Veronica, played by Geena Davis): she's the one who has to make all the tough choices; Brundle (the scientist) simply makes one dumb mistake and the rest is inevitable. Still, that dumb mistake is a doozy, and on that level the film works very well. Langelaan's story was previously filmed in 1958; that film starred Vincent Price.
