Good, if overrated, horror film, loosely based on the 1957 short story by George Langelaan. True, Jeff Goldblum's performance is excellent, and the special effects are commendably disgusting (because they're supposed to be), but the story -- about what happens when a scientist accidentally fuses his DNA with that of a fly during a teleportation experiment -- is told from the wrong perspective. As Langelaan understood, this is really the woman's story (in this case Veronica, played by Geena Davis): she's the one who has to make all the tough choices; Brundle (the scientist) simply makes one dumb mistake and the rest is inevitable. Still, that dumb mistake is a doozy, and on that level the film works very well. Langelaan's story was previously filmed in 1958; that film starred Vincent Price.

I went into this film expecting to hate it. But Goldblum's performance made it rather enjoyable.

This is a movie I wouldn't mind seeing remade again.

Who could do it better than Goldblum?

I'm trying to think of a film that starred him that I didn't like him in. Not that I watch "that" many movies.
But honestly, nothing springs instantly to mind.

Oh wait, did he star in one called Jack Frost, or something? The character was a serialkiller and ended up messing with his shrink's head so bad that she let him out of prison. That is all I can remember.

Mister Frost. I haven't seen it. I'm a big Goldblum fan, but there are a ton of his movies I haven't seen. He reminds me though. I had a teacher in a women's studies course (of all things) in college who told me she disliked Jack Nicholson because no matter the movie, he was always...Jack Nicholson. Goldblum's much the same - but the schtick is so good, I'm generally okay with it.
